How to use the ankle jump rope?

Place one foot in the hoop. Use this foot to swing the ball around. Then jump with the other foot when the ball returns. Now coordinate movement and rhythm accordingly. Voilà!

There are 2 types of the ankle skip ball offered currently in the market. The first one has a stretched-out drawstring made of plastic. The second type has a loose rope with wooden balls. Even though, both are great for beginners, NeuroToys offers the latter option – eco-friendly and more challenging. Where, the person’s foot needs to generate more power to activate the rope and keep it swinging in the air. The faster one goes, the higher the ball is off the ground.

Is skip ball a good exercise?

Oh, yes, it is. Quite beneficial for mental and physical health. The skipping ball activity:

– Trains stamina, agility and concentration;
– Cultivates foot-eye coordination, cleverly promotes the coordination of movement of both feet and general body balance abilities;
– Strengthens bones and all body parts (legs, arms, shoulders, etc.);
– Improves heart health and pulmonary function (blood circulation and lung capacity).

Important additional recommendations from neuro specialists when using the ankle jump rope

  • Train both ankles: one after another, not just one.
  • At the beginning, during introduction, start with a dominant foot (left for left-handed, right for right-handed).
  • Increase difficulty. While a person is jumping, start asking random questions. The goal of the jumping person is to respond to these questions quickly.
  • Use under the direct supervision of adults. Adult supervision is critical in the introductory stage. Remind of the rules. The more patience and explanation are provided at the beginning, the more engaging and productive the child gets in the future.

Precautions during skip ball activities

– Wear socks to prevent ankle abrasion.
– Warm-up for 5-10 minutes before jumping rope. Stretch feet in all directions to tackle muscle tightness.
– Wear comfortable sport shoes (medium to soft soles).
– Jump ball before a meal or at least 2-3 hours after a meal.
– Hydrate well after the exercise. Consume minimum water before exercise.
– Do not exercise if there is pain or swelling. Muscle soreness is ok though.
– Find a soft surface for landing: sand, soil, wood flooring, rubber paths as they provide a good shock absorbent effect and give particularly less pressure on knees. Avoid asphalt and concrete.
