What is a Bocarina Nose Flute?

This type of the nose flute should not be confused with the ocarina or the long nose flute from New Zealand, Africa, Hawaii and Philippines; as it has a different play technique.

Our nose flute is also known as a “Humanatone”, “Humanaphone”, a musical “Nose Whistle” or a “Magic Flute”.

The origin of this nose instrument is not well documented. It is believed that indigenous cultures around the world used it as a communication device at distances (i.e., in forests) and as a musical instrument for storytelling and entertainment rather than for spiritual expression. In the late-1930s, one could find such nose flutes made of wood, plastic, ceramic, ivory and even metal. They were introduced as novelty toys for children, increasing their popularity over all these years.

In many cultures worldwide, musicians, hobbyists and health professionals (i.e., rehabilitation therapists, speech therapists, etc.) continue to use the instrument to this day.

What does this nose flute instrument sound like?

The aerodynamic design of the Bocarina nose flute allows playing a wide range of melodies at a professional level. You get to do both, explore the instrument and actually play music on the flute. It generates a sweet, soft and pleasant-to-the-ear sound, like a flute.

How does the nasal flute work?

Some can start doing it instinctively. Others take time to explore the instrument. Don’t worry, once you decode the tricky coordination with the instrument, simplicity is guaranteed.

Press the nose flute firmly against your nose and mouth. The small part rests against your nose, whereas the big part goes over your mouth. Keep you mouth moderately open. Now, give it a blow ONLY through your nostrils – it’s that easy. Ok, ALMOST that easy! It does take practice to master.

In order to create and control various pitches, one needs to flex muscles of the mouth, fluctuate the opening of the mouth and maintain rhythmic breathing through the nose. One could also refer to it as a variation of beat boxing (or “beatboxing”) in terms of amount of work the mouth does. Where one is using one’s jaw, mouth, lips, tongue, yet not the voice. The mouth becomes the “sound chamber”, while manoeuvring from close to open positions.

TIPS

  • Keep your jaw relaxed at the start.
  • Make sure no air escapes between the edges of your nose and the nose flute.
  • The better and sharper you articulate positions with your mouth and trilling of the tongue, the clearer and in-tune sounds will flow.
  • If you have a tuner and a metronome – practice rhythm and precise basic notes.

How the Bocarina nose flute promotes our health?

  • It is one of the best and easy tools to facilitate nasal airflow, as it maximises velo-pharyngeal control. For example, some children may struggle with the concept of blowing their nose even after the age of 4. This is a good learning tool to help to grasp the concept. Or it is also useful for children who have the habit of breathing through the mouth and need to re-learn breathing.
  • Speech therapists integrate such a plastic nose flute in their work with predominantly preschool children. They recommend it for children with dysarthria, stuttering, pronounced nasal tones in speech and other respiratory dysfunctions. The nose flute helps to develop proper exhalation, breathing control and strengthen muscles of the mouth to achieve speech clarity.
  • Continued use allows to better perceive the air velocity that one uses during play.
  • It improves breathing capacity (inhalation and exhalation), increasing lung capacity and strengthening air column. Some rehabilitation therapists find it beneficial to offer plastic nose flutes to patients, for example for those recovering from pneumonia. Moreover, it can serve as a long-term therapeutic agent for asthmatics.
  • The nose flute forces to vocalise notes, thereby bringing more awareness about sounds and improving personal sound.
  • The activity develops auditory acuity (i.e., assessing hearing possibilities) and musicality.
